Forest Service ADFF Modeling
In 2007, MAI developed a model for the U.S. Forest Service as part of a study of the Aerial Delivery of Firefighters (ADFF). The Forest Service recognized improvement opportunities based on changes in operations, capabilities, equipment, and technology. The purpose of developing the model was to determine the most appropriate mix of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, as well as locations and types of bases for ADFF operations.
MAI used an Access database to develop the model that incorporated historical and projected data, and other key factors and information related to ADFF. The model was run by fiscal year and identified the most efficient and cost effective response for each fire based on specific factors and parameters. Forest Service Leadership was able to review the model outputs and decide upon the most feasible options for ADFF.
The model will continue to be a useful tool for Forest Service Leadership and ADFF operations in the future because new and updated fire data can be incorporated into the model. Therefore, the Forest Service will be able to continually assess to what extent current operations are efficient and cost-effective.
